Overview

Juyongguan (居庸关, Jūyōngguān — "Dwelling in Harmony Pass") is one of the three great Ming Dynasty passes of the Great Wall, alongside Shanhaiguan and Jiayuguan. Located in a narrow 18 km valley just 60 km northwest of central Beijing, it was the main northern gateway to the capital for centuries. The current wall was rebuilt in the 1990s and feels newer than Mutianyu — some purists dislike this, but the advantage is smooth, safe stonework and a compact loop you can complete in under 2 hours. The Cloud Platform (云台, Yúntái), a Yuan Dynasty marble arch carved with Buddhist reliefs, sits at the center of the pass and dates to 1345 — genuinely ancient, unlike the rebuilt wall around it.

Best for

  • Time-pressed visitors
  • History buffs
  • Accessibility seekers

Highlights

  • Cloud Platform (云台, Yúntái) — a 1345 Yuan Dynasty marble arch with Buddhist carvings in six scripts, predating the Ming wall around it
  • Compact figure-eight loop — climb both north and south sections in under 3 hours
  • Closest wall section to central Beijing (60 km)
  • Strategic pass geography — the wall squeezes into a narrow valley, dramatic even without climbing
  • Fewer crowds than Badaling, despite being closer

Tips

  • Climb the north section first (more scenic, better views), then decide if you have energy for the south loop
  • The Cloud Platform is easy to miss — it is inside the pass at ground level, not on the wall
  • There is no cable car — the entire climb is on foot, so wear proper shoes
  • Morning visits are quieter — tour buses start arriving after 10 AM
  • Combine with a visit to the Ming Tombs (明十三陵) 30 minutes away for a full day of Ming history

Frequently asked questions

Is Juyongguan easier than Badaling?

No — Juyongguan is steeper despite being shorter. The steps are higher and more uneven. Badaling has cable cars; Juyongguan does not. Total distance is less (4 km vs 3.74 km of open wall) but the grade is tougher. Fit visitors can do Juyongguan in 1.5–2 hours. Badaling is better for those with mobility concerns.

How does Juyongguan compare to Mutianyu?

Juyongguan is closer (60 km vs 70 km), cheaper to reach (¥12 bus vs ¥80 bus), and faster (2 hours vs 3–4 hours on the wall). Mutianyu is more scenic, has a cable car, and the toboggan ride. Choose Juyongguan for a quick half-day trip; choose Mutianyu for a full-day scenic experience.

What is the Cloud Platform?

The Cloud Platform (云台, Yúntái) is a 1345 Yuan Dynasty marble archway that sits in the center of the Juyongguan pass. Three pagodas originally stood on top (destroyed). The archway interior is carved with Buddhist reliefs and sutras inscribed in six scripts: Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Tangut, Uyghur, and Phags-pa. It is a national treasure and predates the Ming wall.

Is there public transport to Juyongguan?

Yes — Bus 919 from Deshengmen (德胜门) runs every 15–20 minutes, ¥12, 1–1.5 hours. It stops at the Juyongguan entrance. This is the easiest public-transport Great Wall trip from Beijing. No train connection.
