Frequently asked questions
How long is the Jinshanling to Simatai hike?
10.5 km. Most hikers do it in 4-6 hours. It's a point-to-point hike: you start at Jinshanling, walk east along the Wall, and end at Simatai. A return bus brings you back to Beijing.
Is Jinshanling worth the extra effort?
Yes — for serious hikers. The dramatic ridgeline, mix of restored and wild wall, and 67 watchtowers make it the most rewarding Wall hike. It's harder to get to and harder to hike than Mutianyu, but the payoff is bigger.
Can I do Jinshanling as a day trip from Beijing?
Yes — but it's a long day (10-12 hours). 2.5 hours each way by bus, 4-6 hours hiking. Most travelers join an organized day tour for logistics. An alternative: stay overnight in a Jinshanling village and do the hike more leisurely.
