Overview
Let me be honest: the Great Wall was built as a military fortification on mountain ridgelines — it was never designed for accessibility. That said, Badaling (八达岭) has made significant efforts and is the only section where wheelchair users can experience the wall firsthand. Badaling's south section has a wheelchair-accessible elevator from the entrance to the wall level, paved ramps along the first 500 meters of the south route, and accessible restrooms at the base. The north section has steps only. Mutianyu (慕田峪) has a cable car that can accommodate a folded wheelchair (staff will help load/unload), but once on the wall, there are only steps — no ramps. A person with limited mobility who can walk a few steps and handle uneven surfaces could do a short section with assistance. Juyongguan (居庸关 Jūyōngguān) has a partial accessible path to the Cloud Platform (云台 Yúntái) but the wall itself requires climbing steep stairs. Every other section — Jinshanling, Simatai, Gubeikou, Jiankou, Huanghuacheng — is completely inaccessible to wheelchair users. I watched a family help their grandfather in a wheelchair navigate Badaling's south ramp in 2024 — he made it about 300 meters onto the wall, which was genuinely moving.
Best for
- Wheelchair users
- Travelers with mobility impairments
- Elderly visitors
Highlights
- Badaling: elevator to wall level, 500m paved south ramp, accessible restrooms — the only truly accessible section
- Mutianyu: cable car can carry folded wheelchair, but wall itself has only steps — limited access
- Juyongguan: partial accessible path to Cloud Platform, wall requires climbing stairs
- All other sections: completely inaccessible to wheelchair users — steep stairs, no ramps, no elevators
Tips
- At Badaling, use the south entrance (南入口 nán rùkǒu) — the north entrance has stairs only
- The accessible elevator at Badaling is not always working — call ahead (+86 10 6912 2222) to confirm
- Arrive at Badaling by 8 AM — the accessible ramp gets crowded and other visitors may block the path
- Bring a companion — even the accessible sections have slopes and uneven surfaces that require assistance
- The accessible restroom at Badaling is at the base, not on the wall — plan accordingly
- For Mutianyu: contact the cable car staff in advance and they will slow or stop the car for wheelchair loading
Frequently asked questions
Is the Great Wall wheelchair accessible?
Badaling is partially accessible: elevator to the wall, 500m of paved ramp on the south section, accessible restrooms at the base. Mutianyu's cable car can carry a folded wheelchair but the wall itself has only steps. No other section offers meaningful wheelchair access.
Can I take a wheelchair on the Badaling cable car?
Yes, the Badaling cable car can accommodate a folded wheelchair. Staff will assist with loading and unloading. The cable car takes you to the north section, which then requires steps — the accessible south ramp is accessed via elevator, not cable car.
Which Great Wall section is best for elderly or mobility-impaired visitors?
Badaling south section: elevator access, paved ramp, most gradual slope, can experience ~500m of the wall. Mutianyu is second-best: cable car up, but limited to the entry platform unless the person can handle uneven stone steps with assistance.
Are there wheelchair rentals at the Great Wall?
Badaling offers free wheelchair loans at the visitor center (deposit required, typically ¥500 cash or ID). Availability is limited — arrive early or bring your own. No other section offers wheelchair rentals.
