Why can't I use Apple Pay or Google Pay in China?

Last updated:

Quick Answer

Symptom: You tap Apple Pay or Google Pay at a Chinese POS terminal and nothing happens — the merchant says "it doesn't work here."

Cause: Chinese merchants use UnionPay QuickPass QR terminals, not the NFC contactless rails that Apple Pay / Google Pay require; Apple Pay only works at UnionPay-NFC POS, which few stores have.

Solution: Bind your foreign card to Alipay or WeChat Pay and scan the merchant's QR code instead — this is the universal path; Apple Pay works only at select UnionPay terminals in major malls.
