Should I tip in China?
Last updated:
Recommendation
Do not tip in mainland China — it can cause confusion or be refused. The only exception is optional tipping of a private guide you've spent multiple days with.
You're from a tipping culture and don't want to offend or overpay.
The options
| Option | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Do not tip | Almost all situations — restaurants, taxis, hotels, and massages in mainland China. | May feel awkward; some high-end tour guides now quietly expect it. |
| Tip private guides only | Private tour guides or drivers on multi-day trips who went above and beyond. | Still optional; ¥50–¥200/day is generous, never expected. |
