How many days do I need in Zhangjiajie?
3-4 days minimum. Day 1: Tianmen Mountain (full day). Day 2-3: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (overnight inside the park recommended to catch sunrise over the pillars). Day 4: Grand Canyon Glass Bridge + Yellow Dragon Cave. Add a day for Baofeng Lake and Tianzi Mountain if time allows.
Where to stay in Zhangjiajie?
Two options: stay in Zhangjiajie city (cheaper, more restaurants, 30-40 minutes from park entrance) or stay inside the park (Wulingyuan town, walking distance to trails, more expensive). The Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has basic in-park hotels (¥300-600) — book 1-2 weeks ahead in peak season. Outside the park, hotels are ¥150-400.
How do I get to Zhangjiajie?
Fly into Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) — direct flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and 30+ other Chinese cities. High-speed rail from Changsha (capital of Hunan) takes 3 hours. From Changsha Airport, you can take a direct bus to Zhangjiajie (4 hours). The airport is 5 km from downtown and 30 km from the national park.
Is Zhangjiajie suitable for older travelers or kids?
Mixed. The park has cable cars, elevators (the Bailong Elevator, world's tallest outdoor lift, 326m), and shuttle buses that reduce walking. However, many trails have steep stairs, and the glass bridge is not for those with vertigo. Kids love it but should be supervised at heights. Tianmen Mountain's glass skywalk is the most challenging physically.
What is the best photo spot in Zhangjiajie?
Tianzi Mountain lookout for the classic pillar panorama (sunrise is best). The Bailong Elevator ride itself offers stunning views. Hallelujah Mountain (formerly Southern Sky Pillar, renamed after Avatar) is the most-photographed single pillar. For mist/morning shots, take the cable car up early and walk the eastern trails before crowds arrive.
Top attractions
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Frequently asked questions
- Is the glass bridge safe?
- Yes — the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge was engineered by Israeli architect Haim Dotan and is built to withstand 1,200 people. It has held test loads and thousands of visitors daily since 2016. Weight sensors monitor capacity. Some sections have glass-free zones for the squeamish.
- Do I need a guide for Zhangjiajie?
- Recommended for the National Forest Park — it is enormous and the trail system is confusing. Official park guides cost ¥200-300 per day. Independent exploration is possible with the park map (¥5) and Amap navigation, but you will miss some views without local knowledge.
- What is the best time to see the Avatar pillars?
- After rain, when mist rises between the pillars (usually morning in spring and autumn). The "sea of clouds" effect is most reliable April-May and September-October. The pillars themselves are visible year-round; mist adds atmosphere but obscures distance.
- Can I visit on a day trip from Changsha?
- Not recommended — Changsha to Zhangjiajie is 3 hours by high-speed rail each way, leaving only 6-8 hours in the park, which is not enough. Stay at least one night. Day trips are possible but exhausting.
- What should I wear to Zhangjiajie?
- Sturdy hiking shoes (mandatory — trails are steep and often wet), layers (temperatures vary 10°C between base and summit), rain jacket (sudden showers common April-June), sun hat, and small backpack for water and snacks. Avoid open-toed shoes — they will get destroyed on the rocky trails.
