Alipay & WeChat Pay setup wizard

Step 1: Download Alipay

Download Alipay from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). If you already have it, update to the latest version.

Step 2: Sign up with your phone number

Use your home country mobile number (not a Chinese SIM). Alipay will send a verification code by SMS.

Step 3: Add a Visa or Mastercard

Tap "Me" → "Bank Cards" → "Add Card". Enter your card number. For foreign cards, choose "Tour Card" if prompted — this gives you a prepaid balance.

Step 4: Top up your Tour Card (optional)

Tour Card works like a prepaid wallet. Top up with $50-200 via credit card. Limits: ~$1,000 per transaction, ~$5,000 cumulative without full KYC.

Step 5: Start using QR payments

At any shop, restaurant, or taxi in China: open Alipay, tap "Pay", show the merchant your QR code (or scan theirs). No Chinese bank account needed.

Step 6: Same for WeChat Pay (optional)

WeChat Pay International is also available. Process is similar: download WeChat → sign up → "Me" → "Services" → "Wallet" → add foreign card.
