5-Day Chengdu & Panda Itinerary 2026: Pandas, Hotpot, and Leshan cover photo

TL;DR

Chengdu works as a base for five days even if pandas are the headline. Day 1: arrive, Jinli Old Street, hotpot dinner. Day 2: Panda Base at dawn (panda activity peaks 7–9am), People's Park teahouse. Day 3: day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha (1.5h drive). Day 4: Mount Qingcheng (1h drive, Taoist mountain). Day 5: Sichuan cuisine market crawl, depart. The city is one of China's most relaxed — pace yourself; Sichuan food is intense for first-time visitors.

Frequently asked questions

Can I volunteer at the Panda Base?
Yes — the Panda Base runs a half-day volunteer program (¥700) that includes cleaning enclosures, making panda biscuits, and a closer panda encounter. Book at least 2 weeks ahead via the official site or Trip.com.
Is Chengdu hotpot really that spicy?
Yes. The Sichuan mala (numbing-spicy) broth is intense for first-timers. Order a yuanyang pot (half spicy, half mild bone broth) so you can pace yourself. Specify 微辣 (mild) or 鸳鸯 (half-and-half) when ordering.
Should I go to Dujiangyan on the same trip?
If you have a free half-day, yes — the 2,200-year-old irrigation system is a UNESCO site and 30 min from Mount Qingcheng. Combine them on Day 4.
When is the best season for pandas?
Year-round, but September–November is cooler and pandas are more active outside. Avoid July–August — heat pushes pandas indoors to air-conditioned enclosures.
